You know how sometimes you just can’t figure something out?! Well, today was one of those days. I’ve been wanting to make Lorna’s Smitten Kitten pattern for one of my grandchildren, and decided today was the day. So, I picked out some fun fabrics and started. Well, I tried to start. First, my printer is out of ink so when I printed the pattern, none of the colors really came out too well. But, I thought, I don’t really need the colors, as long as I have the printed directions. I did do one smart thing, I decided rather than cut out all the fabrics for all 20 blocks, I would make just one. Just to see how to make the block. So, I then spent the next 5 hours trying to make 1 block! Seriously! 5 hours. For the life of me I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong. I read, re-read, and re-read it again. While it looked kind of right, it wasn’t anywhere near the 12″ it was supposed to be.

Isn’t she cute 🙂 My granddaughter loves purple, she will love this little kitten.

Oh well, I guess my blocks will be smaller than they’re supposed to be. So, I started cutting out the next 2 blocks (still being a bit smarter about it, only doing 2 at a time). The size thing still bothered me. I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong, so I re-read the pattern again. Oh! look, there’s one whole piece that I totally forgot to sew into the block! That would do it. So, block 2 and 3, I made sure that I didn’t forget any of the pieces. See those ears, look carefully at the purple one and this one:

See the difference? Notice how the inner pink is more of a triangle in the blue one and a rectangle in the purple one. yup, that print piece that is under the pink is the one I totally left off. Easy! I’ve solved my problem. Well, not so much. this is where for the life of me I couldn’t figure out how to sew it together and get the size/shape that I was supposed to get. I even took a break and had dinner thinking I was just too tired to figure it out. Tried for another hour and threw up my hands in frustration. So, I sent an email to Lorna, HELP!!!! I can’t figure out how to sew this stupid ear thing! As soon as I hit send, I went back to my sewing table and had an A-HA moment! of course! I sewed it together, it fit perfectly, and in the next 30 minutes sewed two more blocks! Amazing how quickly this sews once you have your head on straight! I really don’t know why I couldn’t figure it out but I am so glad I did so I can now make more of these super cute kitties. I have a little girl who is going to love to have a whole bunch of kitties to cuddle with.

Now I need to remake that purple one.
